The Chick Fil-A Flack

“Ugh!” my co-worker Margie exclaimed as I returned from my failed excursion to Chick Fil-A.  What started out as an innocent question from the Mainstream Media (or was it really a loaded question?) has turned into a mess, and as usual, people are coming out with opinions turning every which way but loose.  Come to think of it, they’re turning loose too, particularly in the morality department.
It all started when the owner of Chick Fil-A, Dan Cathy, was asked his opinion about gay marriage.  He confirmed that he stood for Biblical principles and family values.  As these are undesirable attributes in today’s culture, naturally the gay marriage movement was offended, and liberal politicians stood in line to denounce Cathy and deny Chick Fil-A a place in their cherished cities for being bigoted.  “There is no place for this type of hate in our Great City of Brotherly and Sisterly Affection” Philadelphia Councilman James Kenney said with disgust in his heart for Cathy and the Bible belt, and all the while implying that there was still lots of room for hatred of his type.  Boston Mayor Tom Menino, advocating against Cathy’s right to speak what he believes from his heart, said, “I don’t want an individual who will continue to advocate against people’s rights.  That’s who I am and what Boston’s all about,” which is apparently supporting one group’s rights over another’s.
The gays threatened boycott, and then the right decided to fight back for their beliefs with a customer appreciation day.  It was a huge success, with the faithful and those who deem marriage as a sacred union between a man and a woman showing their support by showing up in droves.  I liked Chick Fil-A even before this political struggle occurred, and not because they were necessarily a Christian organization, but because they make a great chicken sandwich and waffle fries!  I met my brother and his family there with my Mom, and my sister, who had gone several times that day, showed up later, but since I only had a half hour for lunch, I couldn’t stay, and I sadly wound up having to get Del Taco next door.  Chick Fil-A was packed, with not just lines out the door, but masses of people, and barely any standing room!  It was great to see that many people showing their support of not so much a fast food restaurant, but a belief, and one man’s right to speak his mind in the face of sanctimonious political correctness.
They think it’s their way or the highway.  The liberal left somehow thinks that anybody with half a brain will believe like they do.  Well doesn’t everybody believe in evolution?  You’d have to be a total ignoramus not to, they say!  And everybody who’s anybody of course would just have to support their causes!  And if the head of a fast food chain doesn't agree with all their ideals, then they should easily be able to bring him under control by threatening a boycott for his slander!  But what they found out is that there are a lot of people out there who don’t agree with them, and who think pretty much the same way that Dan Cathy does.  It’s people like that that help to keep the liberal left from completely taking over.  It’s why Fox News is actually so important for being the one news organization who doesn’t just spout the usual liberal spin that so indoctrinates the masses.
When I stuck up for my actions and support for my faith and principles, and the first amendment rights of Dan Cathy, Margie conceded just a bit, saying she didn’t think such a political debate belonged among the tables and condiments in a fast food restaurant chain.  She may have a point, but Cathy is still (STILL) entitled to his opinion, and it wasn’t the Christians who were outraged and threatened to boycott.  It wasn’t the conservative republican politicians who despised him for simply having an opinion contrary to theirs, denouncing his supposed hatred for homosexuals while they had free reign to openly abhor him and his beliefs among throngs of cheering Christian bashers.
And then something weird happened.  Some of the people over on the left, even some gays, supported Dan Cathy for his right to speak his opinion!  By the same token, some people over on the right, even the religious right, agreed with my co-worker, and found the support for Chick Fil-A distasteful.  Hmm, really?  I thought it was wonderful!  I loved seeing all that support for Christian principles and Freedom of Speech!
Oh well, it takes all kinds.  Some liberals are going to "jump ship" and side with those touting one man's right to say what he wants, especially if he was asked!  Likewise, some Christians are going to side with those who follow the ideals of this world, somehow twisting Jesus' message that the world "hates me because I testify that what it does is evil" (John 7:7) into "I'm okay, you're okay."  I’m still shocked by the number of Christian women who support Planned Parenthood!  It's not the only place to get breast screenings and family planning information, and that doesn't make up for the deaths of more than 300,000 innocent souls every year!
